Demand Justice for K-9 Georgia After Hot Car Death

The Issue

K-9 Georgia’s death was preventable. The young bloodhound, beloved by the Dade County Sheriff’s Office and donated to serve the community, died after being left in a hot patrol car when the vehicle’s AC failed and its heat alarm malfunctioned. Temperatures inside soared past safe levels, and by the time she was found, it was too late.

Georgia wasn’t just a working dog — she was family. She had been trained to track missing people, help solve cases, and serve Dade County with loyalty. Her handler and the sheriff’s office promised to keep her safe, but on that day, the system failed her completely. The sheriff himself admitted her death was “unacceptable.”

In response, the sheriff’s office updated its K-9 policy, fired the handler, and referred the case to the District Attorney. But justice for Georgia cannot stop there. This tragedy shows what happens when oversight is weak and safety policies are treated as optional. Without real accountability, Georgia could be just one of many.

This is the moment to act. Summer heat in Georgia is relentless — and every day without stronger protections puts other K-9s at risk. If one dog can die in a patrol car, others can too. We cannot let Georgia’s story fade into another headline about “accidents.”

We call on the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association and state lawmakers to ensure Georgia’s death leads to permanent change. That means making K-9 safety rules enforceable across the state, with real consequences when they are ignored. No dog should be left unattended in a hot vehicle. No handler should cut corners with a partner’s life.

Georgia gave her loyalty to Dade County. Now it’s time for Georgia to give her justice.
