Demand Justice for Dog Abused by North Texas Firefighter

The Issue

A horrifying video surfaced on September 17 showing a man dragging, kicking, and punching a dog in his home. The footage went viral because of its brutality — a helpless animal was beaten, thrown, and left terrified. Just days later, the man in the video, Azle firefighter Tyler Stein, was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty.

This case is about more than one dog. It is about whether public servants entrusted with protecting lives can be allowed to harm the most vulnerable without consequence. Stein had just finished probation at the Azle Fire Department. He was supposed to be someone families could count on in emergencies. Instead, the community saw him brutalize a dog on camera.

The department quickly placed him on leave and then fired him, but accountability cannot stop there. Animal cruelty is not a minor offense — it is a violent crime and a warning sign of deeper danger. When it is committed by someone sworn to serve the public, the stakes are even higher.

We are calling on Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells, the Fort Worth Police Department, and the Azle Fire Department leadership to ensure that this case is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, without plea deals that minimize the abuse. Sentences for animal cruelty must reflect the seriousness of the crime, especially when committed by a public employee.

Pets are family. Cruelty against them cannot be excused, ignored, or treated as a private matter. The people of North Texas deserve to know that those who commit violence against animals will never again hold positions of public trust.

This dog survived. But unless our leaders act, the message sent is that animals — and the safety of families who love them — do not matter. That cannot be allowed to stand.

Sign if you believe North Texas must deliver full justice in this case and hold public servants accountable for cruelty.
