On Monday afternoon, Jean Schultz — an 80-year-old crossing guard in Woodland Park, New Jersey — was struck and killed while doing her job: helping two children safely cross the street. The children were also hit. They survived. Jean did not.

Schultz dedicated herself to keeping kids safe at the corner of Lackawanna and McBride avenues every single day. Neighbors remembered her as warm, compassionate, and fully devoted to her community. "She loved the job. She loved it, and it cost her her life," said a neighbor who knew her well.

The driver who hit her remained at the scene. As of this writing, no charges have been filed.

Crossing guards put their bodies between moving vehicles and children. They deserve protection under the law — and when they are killed in the line of duty, the justice system must respond with urgency. Jean Schultz's death cannot become just another statistic.
