Demand justice and protection for Lake Tahoe bears

A tragic and unnecessary incident occurred near Lake Tahoe involving a mother black bear. (This bear was NOT the famous Hope). She was tragically shot, allegedly due to several incidents with humans who reported her breaking into vehicles and an injury caused to a woman. This loving mother of two five-month-old cubs supposedly entered developed areas despite efforts to haze her away. However, the nature of these hazing efforts remains unclear and unreported.
The emotional toll of this situation is significant. The mother bear should not have been lethally removed. Instead, organizations such as The Bear League, which specialize in humane bear management, should have been consulted. Their expertise in non-lethal hazing techniques could have preserved both the safety of the local human population and the bear's life.
Now, her two young cubs are left vulnerable and motherless. They face an uncertain future, a situation that was entirely preventable. With resources like The Bear League, which is dedicated to maintaining harmony between humans and bears, we can prevent such tragedies from occurring.
Steps need to be taken to educate the public on coexisting with wildlife and to employ more transparent, effective, and humane methods of wildlife management. Comprehensive training for wildlife officials, coupled with public awareness campaigns about living alongside our local bear population, are vital. We need clear guidelines and actions to ensure non-lethal solutions are prioritized. This case should serve as a call to action for adopting compassionate wildlife management strategies.
We urge the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to re-evaluate their current protocols and to collaborate with wildlife specialists like The Bear League to protect both people and our precious wildlife.

HEARTBREAKING NEWS 💔🐻 A mother black bear near Lake Tahoe was euthanized after several human interactions. Wildlife officials say the bear had previously broken into vehicles and allegedly injured a woman who sustained bruises and cuts after attempting to scare the bear with pots and pans. The bear supposedly entered developed areas despite hazing efforts. What those hazing efforts were, we are unsure about.
💔 Her two five-month-old cubs survived.
According to @californiadfw , the cubs have been taken to a Northern California wildlife rehabilitation facility, where they will be cared for with the hope of eventually being released back into the wild. Officials have not publicly identified the rehabilitation center.
This tragedy is a reminder that true coexistence starts long before an animal is labeled a “problem.” Preventing bears from becoming food-conditioned through secure trash, bear-proof food storage, and community education is one of the most effective ways to reduce conflicts and save both human and bear lives.
When will we stop punishing wildlife for trying to exist in a world we’ve made impossible for them to survive? When will it stop? What will help @californiadfw to not kill our wildlife?
Is it fundraising for relocation efforts? We demand transparency. We are tired of the excuse that “this bear had a history” and needed to be put down. Now her cubs are forced to grow up without her, and who’s to say they won’t suffer the same fate one day if “they have a history” as well.
We aren’t denying that conflicts happen. We are denying that our state wildlife agencies are trying everything possible to ensure lethal removal isn’t an option. STOP KILLING OUR WILDLIFE. ASK THE PUBLIC FOR HELP IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO NOT KILL. We are tired of this.
