Demand Instagram to Revise Their Policies on Mental Health Recovery Posts
The Issue
My name is Grace, and I run an Instagram account called @gro.wingwithgrace. My mission is to inspire and support those who are on their journey of mental health recovery. However, Instagram has repeatedly taken down my content, citing violations of regulations related to suicide and self-injury. If they took the time to watch my videos, they would understand that my posts are not promoting harmful behaviors but rather advocating for getting help and recovery.
Instagram's current policy seems harsh, discriminatory, and inconsistent. There are numerous posts that promote eating disorders or other harmful behaviors that remain untouched while mine - aimed at helping others heal - get deleted simply because of a misunderstanding.
Mental health issues affect millions worldwide; in the U.S alone, over one in five adults live with a mental illness (National Institute of Mental Health). It's crucial for platforms like Instagram to foster an environment where open discussions about mental health recovery can take place without fear of unwarranted censorship.
We call upon Instagram to revise their policies around mental health content. They must take into account the context and intention behind these posts before making decisions about removals. This will ensure that those who seek help or wish to share their stories can do so freely.
Please sign this petition if you believe in creating a safer and more understanding space for mental health conversations online.
