As deeply concerned citizens of Kerala and across India, we've been affected immensely by the dangers posed by the over-a-century-old Mullaperiyar Dam. This dam is not just a monumental structure, but it is inextricably tied to our lives and livelihoods; therefore, we feel personally responsible to raise our voices.

Recently, there have been increased concerns regarding the structural integrity of this dam. Built in 1895, mainly with lime and surkhi, the dam has been posing significant risks for years now which is frightening considering that millions of lives are dependent on its safety. Our fear is not unwarranted as the dam has seen two major flood threats in 1924 and 2018 causing significant damage.

The government of Kerala has continually expressed concerns about its structural safety. However, the dispute with Tamil Nadu over control of the dam has hindered proper maintenance and upgrade of this ancient structure, leaving us in a state of constant worry.

We urgently appeal to the Honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to take immediate and substantial measures for assessing the safety of the dam along with significant improvements in its management and maintenance. As citizens of this country, we have the right to live in a safe environment, and the safety of Mullaperiyar Dam drastically affects this right.

We place our trust in your leadership, Mr Prime Minister, confident that you will take this matter seriously for protecting the lives of millions of your fellow citizens. We urge you to act now.
