Demand immediate pavement of Holly Grove Road and Whites Farm Road
The Issue
Issue:
This petition is both personal and vital. Over 20 years ago, I moved to this area and was charmed by its serenity and beautiful neighborhoods. However, one ongoing issue has been tormenting us all: the poor condition of Holly Grove Road and Whites Farm Road. The South Carolina Department of Transportation's inaction led to a tragic incident we will forever mourn. Sadly, Sunny, our family dog, was cruelly taken from us by a motorist who swerved to avoid a pothole. We can't bring Sunny back but we can make sure that it doesn't happen again, or worse, happen to a child.
Holly Grove Road and Whites Farm Road are prime examples of the unsafe roads we endure daily. The damaging effects are costing local taxpayers immensely during already economically hard times. In recent months, I've submitted to SCDOT several maintenance work requests. There have been no noticeable repairs. I've lived here for thirty-two years, and Holly Grove Road has yet to be repaved. The patches, meant for filling potholes, are efficient for a short time. After that time, they become a nuisance to the community. Something must be done about this.
Our road has been in atrocious condition for years, peppered with potholes, patched ineffectively, and become more of a risk than a convenience. Studies show that highway agencies spend on average $79 million annually on patching potholes and up to $160 million on related vehicle repairs. Surely, it would be more cost-effective to repave the road entirely than to repeatedly patch it poorly while endangering our lives (Source: American Automobile Association).
The urgent plead for immediate pavement of this road, comes not just from our loss but the threat this poses to our community's safety. We need action. We need a change. We, the residents of South Carolina, demand action from the Department of Transportation. We step out publicly to request that Holly Grove Rd. and White's Farm Rd. of Blacksburg, South Carolina is resurfaced or repaved. This can prevent other accidents or unnecessary tragedies. Please sign this petition to support our demand for safer roads. Thank you, Amy Mayberry.
