Demand Immediate Installation of Elevators at Essex-Delancey Street Station

The Issue

I am a resident of the Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City. Like many others in my community, I rely on the subway for my daily commute. However, the lack of elevators at the Essex-Delancey Street Station is a significant barrier to our mobility.

This issue is not just personal to me but affects many residents who are elderly or disabled and cannot navigate stairs easily. According to data from The Center for Independence of the Disabled, New York (CIDNY), approximately 10% of NYC's population have physical disabilities that make stair navigation difficult or impossible.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has an obligation under both local and federal law - including the Americans with Disabilities Act - to ensure its services are accessible to all users. Yet despite this legal requirement and repeated calls from community members like myself, there are still no elevators at this crucial station.

We urge MTA officials to prioritize accessibility improvements at Essex-Delancey Street Station by installing elevators immediately. This action will greatly improve quality of life for countless residents who currently struggle with access issues every day.

Please sign this petition today and help us send a clear message that we need elevators NOW at Essex-Delancey Street Station!
