The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Ara Street, Dorado Park, and surrounding areas in Windhoek, are deeply frustrated and profoundly disappointed by the City of Windhoek's persistent failure to maintain our road. Since the potholes first appeared and were reported in 2024, we have waited over two years for meaningful intervention. Instead, the situation has steadily worsened into a severe and hazardous crisis that can no longer be ignored.

Ara Street has become a treacherous minefield of large, deep potholes that make every drive a calculated risk. Despite repeated complaints, formal reports, and photographic evidence submitted since 2024, no substantive repairs have been made. This prolonged inaction stands in stark contrast to the City's mandate and the rates and taxes we faithfully pay to ensure basic infrastructure is maintained.

The severity of the current conditions is undeniable and escalating:

  • Severe Vehicle Damage and Financial Burden: Potholes cause daily destruction to suspensions, tyres, rims, and alignments. Residents face constant, unplanned repair costs that strain household budgets and erode financial stability—expenses directly resulting from municipal neglect.
  • Clear and Present Safety Risks: Drivers must swerve unpredictably to avoid craters, increasing the danger of head-on collisions, pedestrian accidents, and impacts with parked vehicles. The hazard intensifies dramatically at night and during rain, when water-filled potholes become nearly invisible death traps. This is not a minor inconvenience; it is a serious accident waiting to happen.
  • Irrefutable Evidence of Neglect: Recent photographs (attached/embedded) document the appalling state of the road—deep craters, crumbling surfaces, and worsening damage—serving as undeniable proof of two years of inaction while the problem grows more dangerous.

We are disappointed that our community has been overlooked for so long, especially amid broader citywide pothole challenges and public admissions of funding constraints. A resident has even resorted to personally filling potholes on Ara Street out of sheer desperation, highlighting how intolerable the situation has become. This reflects a fundamental breach of public trust: we pay for services we are not receiving.

Enough is enough. We demand accountability and urgent remedial action from the City of Windhoek, constituency councillors, regional council, and all relevant public institutions.

Our firm demands:

  1. Immediate On-Site Assessment: Dispatch a qualified technical team to Ara Street without further delay to fully evaluate the damage and determine the scope of required repairs.
  2. Permanent, Durable Repairs: Schedule and complete comprehensive road resurfacing and reconstruction—no temporary patches that fail with the next rain. The repair must be lasting and fit for purpose.
  3. Formal Written Response and Timeline: Provide a detailed, official written reply to this petition (and the attached supporting letter), outlining specific actions, responsible parties, and a realistic completion timeline. This response must be delivered no later than 20 March 2026.

By signing this petition, you join us in asserting that residents deserve safe, well-maintained roads—not excuses or indefinite delays. Our frustration is justified, our disappointment is deep, but our resolve is stronger. Together, we hold authorities accountable for the safety and wellbeing of our community.

Sign today. Share widely. Insist on action.

The residents of Ara Street and Dorado Park have waited long enough. The time for repairs is now.

In firm solidarity and justified urgency, Residents of Ara Street, Dorado Park, and Concerned Citizens of Windhoek.
