We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the recent last-minute changes to Durham Elementary’s master schedule and staffing assignments.
These changes were implemented abruptly—just days before the school year began—without adequate input from campus leadership, teachers, or the community. As a result, they have caused:
- Disruption to teacher assignments and grade-level teams, undermining classroom continuity and student learning.
- Reduced access to IB programming that sets Durham apart as a high-quality choice for families.
- Confusion and instability for students, parents, and staff.
- Significant risk to community confidence and future enrollment.
We call on HISD leadership to:
- Continue the phased implementation plan already in progress. Reinstate teaching structure in 2nd and 3rd grade to not disrupt the planned school year.
- Finalize staffing by early summer, not days before school starts.
- Allow use of Eureka math curriculum, which is already sitting on campus.
We urge HISD to honor the phased Dual Language implementation plan, with a commitment to finalizing staffing decisions before summer. Our high-performing 2nd and 3rd grade math teachers have shown exemplary results, and we advocate for keeping them in their current roles for the 2025–2026 school year. Changes should be made openly, involving campus leadership in a collaborative process that prioritizes transparency.
These requests are not extravagant; they are reasonable, practical measures that place the welfare of our students at the forefront. As residents and stakeholders in HISD, we demand that HISD listens to the voices of this community and acts in our children’s best interests.
Join us in urging the Houston Independent School District to commit to these actionable steps. Sign the petition to ensure our educators and students receive the stability they deserve in their learning environment.
