Petition: End Potters Bar’s Pothole Crisis
To: Hertfordshire County Council, the Highways Department and Cabinet Member for Highways Stephen Giles-Medhurst

The state of the roads in Potters Bar has reached a breaking point. From the heavy traffic on Mutton Lane and the High Street to the residential avenues of Oakmere, Furzfield, The Royds, Parkfield and Little Heath areas, our town is being marred by deep, dangerous, and damaging potholes.

The numerous potholes and deteriorating road conditions are growing problem, putting residents and their vehicles at risk. Many of us have experienced the frustration and expense that comes from damaged tyres, wheels, and suspension. These damages are not mere inconveniences, they result in costly repairs that many cannot afford repeatedly.

Our community has endured these hazardous road conditions for far too long. Potholes not only make our journeys uncomfortable and potentially dangerous, they also deter visitors to our charming town, affecting local businesses that thrive on tourism and local foot traffic. The unsightly state of our roads does not reflect the pride we have in our town.

For too long, residents of Potters Bar have had to endure "patchwork" repairs that require refilling every year. These temporary fixes are a waste of taxpayer money and do nothing to address the underlying decay of our infrastructure.

We, the residents of Potters Bar, are calling for:

  1. A comprehensive road audit: A full assessment of Potters Bar’s primary and secondary roads to identify areas requiring full resurfacing rather than temporary filling.
  2. Quality over speed to be prioritised: An end to "quick-fix" solutions. We demand that repairs be carried out to a standard that lasts years, not weeks.
  3. Progress to reduce through traffic: Investment in local bus services, speed management and physically carrying out the long awaited local cycling and walking infrastructure plan to reduce the long term wear and tear on our roads.
  4. Accountability for damage: A streamlined and fair process for residents to claim compensation for vehicle damage (tyres, alloys, and suspension) caused by neglected road surfaces.
  5. Safeguarding cyclist and pedestrian safety: Potholes, damaged pavements, railings and grates, especially near curbs and at junctions pose a threat to pedestrians and cyclists. These must be treated with the highest urgency.

Our cars are being damaged, our cyclists are being put at risk, and the overall appearance of our town is declining. It is time that our council tax money was invested back into the safety and driveability of Potters Bar.

Hertfordshire County Council must acknowledge and address this issue urgently. A reactive approach of temporary patches has not sufficed; we need investments in thorough repairs that will endure through the years. Moreover, it is crucial to proactively reduce the prevalence of these road hazards in the future by investigating and mitigating the root causes.

For the safety, appearance, and economic health of Potters Bar, this initiative cannot wait any longer. We ask our Hertfordshire County council members to prioritise this issue with the attention it demands.

Join us in urging Hertfordshire County Council to take definitive action. Sign this petition to advocate for safer and smoother roads in Potters Bar. Together, we can drive change for the betterment of our community.
