Demand Healthy Meal Options in the SCCC Cafeteria
The Issue
As an athlete, proper nutrition is a key component to performance. It fuels our bodies; providing energy, ensuring proper recovery, supporting muscle growth, preventing injuries, and above all, safeguarding our general health. Yet, our cafeteria fails to consistently provide healthy options at lunch and dinner times. Our food is not just a satiety tool, it's essentially our fuel—the better the fuel, the better the performance.
Unfortunately, our cafeteria often lacks these essential nutrients which are required to perform at a high level. There is an increasing recognization in the sports world of the importance of nutrition in regard to athletic performance. We need consistent access to be able to choose healthy, nutrient-dense food, for the sake of our performance and overall well-being. To ensure that we can perform at our best, and to help promote healthful eating among all students—athlete or not—we invite the administration to provide at least one healthy option at both lunch and dinner times consistently. A solution to this would be always to have at least one grilled protein option at the hot bar or specialty station. There are often times when the options in the meal service are only fried or ultra-processed foods. It is vital to at least have the decision to make healthy choices, especially when most students are either international or simply cannot afford the luxury of buying and cooking their meals.
