The issue

Introduction

In December 2021, Emily Campbell-Ross was raped by someone she trusted in her own home while she was asleep. After reporting the crime to the police and going through the trial process, the perpetrator, Thomas Earle, was found guilty but received a lenient sentence of just 300 hours of community service and 20 hours of counselling.

The Problem

Outraged by this gross miscarriage of justice, Emily decided to take action. She started the #NoJusticeInCommunityService campaign to advocate for stronger sentencing for sexual crimes. This campaign is raising awareness of the injustices victims face when perpetrators are sentenced to community service.

The Research

The ACT has some of the most lenient minimum sentencing laws for rape in Australia. The current sentencing framework prioritises the offender's character over the harm done to the victim, which is unacceptable.

The Solution

We are demanding fairer and more just punishments for those who commit sexual assault. By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with survivors like Emily and demanding action from lawmakers to strengthen the community message that there is no place for sexual assault in modern Australia.
