Demand Google Play to Remove Remini App for Promoting Discrimination and AI Racial Bias
The Issue
I am a Black woman who purchased a premium license to use the pro version of the Remini App by Bending Spoons. This app, once an essential tool that recognized my race and hair type, lately showcases a noticeable and extremely disturbing AI racial bias. Nefariously, the app now lightens my skin and alters my naturally curly hair into straight hair, completely erasing my ethnic identity. Even the images of Black curly-headed women used in some of the app's presets are, upon output, transformed into fair-skinned figures with straight hair. This feels like a deceitful bait-and-switch tactic.
The Remini App is deceptive because it provides misleading information the screenshots and presets. Showing that dark skin and textured hair as an output that can be achieved - but it's not anymore.
On the Bending Spoons website, it states that 'Rationality
Resisting the influence of biases' is apart of their values. However the Remini Apps demonstrates otherwise.
This isn't just a personal problem. Remini App's actions have grown into an echo chamber of the racial bias towards people of darker complexions by implementing biased AI algorithms. By lightening the skin color of its users, the app is perpetuating a form of digital discrimination rarely seen elsewhere. It's dehumanizing. It's disheartening.
We deserve digital platforms that respect and celebrate our authentic selves rather than distorting our image to fit a misguided standard of beauty. Let us stand against racial bias and demand Google Play to remove the Remini App until it corrects its flawed algorithms and institutes adequate measures to prevent such bias in the future. Together, we can make a difference. Please sign this petition today.
