Demand GA DOT to Decrease the Speed Limit on Hwy 20 for Improved Traffic Safety

The Issue

The dangers of Hwy 20 are many, speed, impaired drivers, and passing lane switches. I, just like many others, have witnessed far too many close-calls on this highway. Over the course of the past five years, this road has claimed numerous lives, leaving families and communities devastated. Therefore, it is imperative that we call on the Georgia Department of Transportation (GA DOT) to reduce the speed limit on this dangerous highway.

Lowering the speed limit could drastically improve the driving conditions, allowing local law enforcement to better monitor and control the traffic. A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) demonstrated that a 5 mph reduction in the maximum speed limit resulted in a significant decrease in the fatal crash rate (Retting, R.A., Kyrychenko, S.Y., 2008). By taking this step, we can help prevent needless tragedies on Hwy 20. This is the means by which the Cumming end of Hwy 20 used to reduce the amount of fatal accidents on that end of the highway.

Multiple new housing developments on both ends of 20 (Cartersville and Canton) mean more drivers on an already dangerous road. Despite the projected widening projects for 20, those are years in the making, we need an immediate solution to increase safety for everyone who travels this highway.

Personally, I have spoken with CCSD and State Troopers, they both mention this is the only recourse we as citizens have to address the issues on 20.

Let's act before another family has to grieve, before another life is ended too soon on Hwy 20. Sign the petition now to decrease the speed limit on Hwy 20. Make our roads safer for everyone.
