Demand Free Home Care for Alzheimer's and Dementia Patients
The Issue
Our personal struggle represents a national crisis - the lack of free home care for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. In October 2022, my mother, a hardworking woman who contributed to society until her retirement, was diagnosed with mixed Alzheimer's and Vascular dementia. Having already lost her husband to a terminal brain tumour in January 2021, her condition has slowly deteriorated, leaving her double incontinent and unable to walk.
As her primary carer, I spend countless hours providing her with the care she requires. However, we also need the specialized help of a care company, a valuable resource that costs £80 for minimal 3-hour calls. This is a steep price that many similar families struggle to afford.
According to the Alzheimer's Society, there are an estimated almost 1 million people with dementia in the UK. With the aging population, this number is projected to rise to over 1 million by 2025 and 2 million by 2051. These staggering statistics are a clear call for change.
While the NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is an option, the stringent criteria disqualify many from receiving this aid. Our plea is simple: provide free care at home for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Disease such as these, with no current cures, should not drive families to financial distress alongside the emotional and physical toll they inherently bring.
We demand the government and responsible bodies make dementia care free at the point of need, treating it with the same dignity and respect as other terminal conditions. It's time to stand for families like ours. We ask for your support to bring about this crucial change. Please sign our petition. Make Dementia a Priority Wes chose to stop help due October 2025 & dropped targets for early diagnosis of dementia disgrace.
