The Issue
Yesterday was not just another day; it was a day of mourning for our towing community as we lost another tow brother on Highway 401 in Southwestern Ontario. As a Tow Wife and part of a Tow Family, I am furious. This was not an accident. It was a preventable death caused by a systemic failure in Ontario’s safety system.
In the past three years, two tow operators have been killed by commercial drivers—this is not a coincidence. It is a glaring indication of the failures in safety measures that are supposed to protect those who risk their lives every day to help others. Amber lights are not sufficient for visibility. Amber and blue might work for plows, but tow trucks need the heightened visibility provided by red and blue lights along with sirens.
We, the tow operators, have been asking for red and blue lights, sirens, and stringent accountability for years, only to be ignored by the Ontario government, especially the Minister of Transportation. Amber lights simply don't offer the visibility needed to ensure our safety while performing roadside duties. Our demands are not for lavish benefits; they are minimal requirements for the safety of those who work at high risk every day.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, nearly 50% of people who die in road collisions involving a heavy truck are not truck drivers. This statistic highlights the significant risk faced by other road users, including tow operators. Enhanced visibility is not just a preference, it's a necessity to prevent further loss of life. Incorporating red and blue lights on tow trucks will make them as recognizable as police vehicles, reducing the likelihood of speeding vehicles hitting them.
The loss of another tow operator does not have to be in vain. We demand immediate action from the Ontario government to revise the safety regulations and provide the appropriate equipment that will allow tow operators to perform their tasks safely.
Join us to ensure that those who save lives on the highways can return safely to their families at the end of the day. Demand that the Ontario government step up and take the necessary actions today. Your signature can make a world of a difference in saving a life.
