The Issue

We, the citizens of South Africa, hereby exercise our constitutional right to peaceful protest and petition to demand immediate political change in our country. Our nation faces an unprecedented crisis of corruption, economic collapse, and governance failure that has left millions in poverty, unemployment, and despair. The recent events in Nepal, where youth-led protests successfully demanded accountability, demonstrate the power of citizen action . Similarly, South Africa's youth are now rising to demand change, frustrated by decades of empty promises and systematic corruption that have left our country with among the highest unemployment rates globally .

The current administration under President Cyril Ramaphosa has failed to deliver on its promises to combat corruption and revitalise our economy. Despite initial hopes that he would clean up government after the Zuma era, recent scandals have revealed deep-rooted corruption that reaches the highest levels of government . With over 60% of South Africa's youth unemployed and the economy in recession, we cannot afford to wait any longer for change . This petition outlines our grievances, demands, and proposed solutions for a peaceful transition to accountable governance.

Presidential Corruption and Failure of Leadership

· Gupta Family Connections: Despite his reputation as a reformer, President Ramaphosa maintained allies within his administration who were implicated in corruption scandals, including former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene who resigned after admitting to undisclosed meetings with the Gupta family . This indicates that corruption networks remain embedded within our government.

· Inaction on State Capture: The president has failed to adequately pursue and prosecute those responsible for systematic plunder of state resources during the Zuma era and continuing into his administration. The ongoing judicial inquiry into state capture has revealed how former president Jacob Zuma organized the plunder of government departments and public enterprises, yet few high-profile convictions have been achieved .

· Economic Mismanagement: Under the current administration, South Africa has slipped into recession with unemployment reaching about 28 percent, yet no effective plan has been implemented to address this crisis . The president's approach has been characterised as "another talk shop" rather than transformative action .

Ministerial Corruption and Failures

·1) Multiple Corruption Scandals: Ministers within the current administration have been implicated in various corruption schemes, including financial mismanagement, fraudulent contracts, and abuse of state resources .

2) Failure to Address Youth Unemployment: With 53% youth unemployment in Southern Africa (the highest rate on the continent), ministers have failed to implement effective programs to create jobs or support youth entrepreneurship .

3) Wasteful Expenditure: While millions of South Africans struggle to afford basic necessities, government ministers have continued lavish spending on luxury vehicles, accommodations, and unnecessary travel .

Documented Failures of the Current Administration

Area of Failure Specific Examples Impact on South Africa
Corruption Gupta family connections, undisclosed meetings Erosion of public trust, loss of foreign investment
Economic Management Recession, 28% unemployment Widespread poverty, increased inequality
Youth Development 53% youth unemployment in Southern Africa Brain drain, lost economic potential

Formal Demands

Based on the above grounds, we hereby demand:

1. Immediate resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa for his failure to combat corruption, address unemployment, and revive South Africa's economy.
2. Resignation of all ministers implicated in corruption scandals, with particular emphasis on those who have engaged in undisclosed relationships with corrupt business entities like the Gupta family .
3. Independent forensic audit of all government ministries and departments to identify and prosecute all officials involved in corruption, with oversight by respected civil society organizations.
4. Establishment of a transitional government comprised of respected former officials, civil society representatives, and economic experts to manage the country until free and fair elections can be held.

Proposed Transitional Government Structure

To ensure stability during the transition period, we propose the following structure:

· Interim Council of Elders: Composed of respected former officials from across the political spectrum, constitutional experts, and representatives from civil society organizations. This council would oversee the transition process and ensure constitutional continuity.

· Technocratic Cabinet: A temporary cabinet comprised of experienced professionals with proven expertise in their fields rather than political appointees. This cabinet would focus on stabilizing the economy, restoring essential services, and preparing for elections.

· Electoral Preparation Committee: A special committee including representatives from all major political parties and international observers to ensure free and fair elections within 12 months.

· Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Corruption: Modeled after South Africa's successful post-apartheid truth commission, this body would investigate and document corruption, providing a path for accountability and healing .

This transitional government would derive its legitimacy from the South African Constitution of 1996, which was drafted through an inclusive process that involved "the collective wisdom of the South African people" . The Interim Constitution of 1993 provides precedent for transitional constitutional arrangements that maintain legal continuity while facilitating political change .

Youth Concerns and Economic Proposals

We recognize that South Africa's youth have borne the brunt of government failure and corruption:

· Unemployment Crisis: With over 60% of African youth unemployed , we demand immediate implementation of yemployment programs focused on digital skills, renewable energy, and infrastructure development.
· Education Reform: Immediate review and overhaul of the education system to ensure alignment with job market needs and digital skills development .
· Youth Representation: Guaranteed youth representation in all transitional government structures and future political processes, recognizing that African youth are ready to lead .
· Economic Revival Plan: Immediate development and implementation of a comprehensive economic recovery plan focused on job creation, support for small businesses, and investment in renewable energy .

Call to Action and Signature Collection

We call on all South Africans who demand change to:

1. Sign this petition and share it through all available channels
2. Hold off on protests and demonstrations
3. Engage in civil and peaceful protests if our demands are not met
4. Support youth-led initiatives for political change and economic reform

We draw inspiration from successful youth-led movements in Nepal  and across Africa , but commit to peaceful protest and non-violent resistance. The burning of infrastructure and looting only hurts our communities and undermines our cause. Instead, we will use digital mobilisation and peaceful mass media movement to make our voices heard.
