The Issue

This petition is deeply personal, originating from a tragic incident that took place in our hometown, Akron. On November 28, 2024, a life was needlessly lost when a 15-year-old boy, Jazmir Tucker, was shot and killed by an Akron Police officer in an act that showed a heinous disregard for life and humanity. This is a problem not only for the Tucker family but also for everyone living in Akron, as we deserve police officers who protect us, not harm us.

Police violence constitutes a leading cause of death for young men in the United States. A study conducted by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) found that about 1 in 1,000 black men and boys in America can expect to die at the hands of police. This number must be drastically reduced; we must take measures to prevent further loss.

We, hence, demand the immediate firing of the officer involved in Jazmir's death. This will not only deliver justice to Jazmir and his grieving family but will also send a strong message about the unacceptability of such brutality from those who are meant to serve and protect us.

We appeal to the Akron Police Department, local government, and every citizen of Akron to support this cause. Let's ensure that such a heartbreaking incident does not happen again in our community. We urge you to sign this petition and take a step closer to a safer Akron.
