Demand for Better Road and Utility Services for Diné People on the Navajo Nation in Utah

The Issue

My journey begins on the previously smooth and well-maintained roads of San Juan County, Utah. Alas, the joy of smooth driving has become a distant memory due to the recent shift of responsibility to Navajo Nation Agencies and their business partners. It seems as if we, the Navajo people, have been left in the dust with neglected road conditions. Furthermore, the sad state of utility services has exacerbated our plight. The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA), though claiming to be a nonprofit dedicated to serving our people, seems to be motivated more by profit than the welfare of the Navajo people.

Many in our community share these experiences – poorly maintained roads and unreliable utility services without alternative providers. The road maintenance in San Juan County was superior by stark contrast before this shift, and the service of our former utility provider, Rocky Mountain Power, was noteworthy for its timeliness in resolving power disturbances and has Recently shown when NTUA had a Recent Power Outage and our people went Days on ends without electricity with much of their Food going Bad and being unable to communicate with Family and NTUA themselves to address there concerns.

It is a reality that lack of accessibility to reliable roads and electricity hinders our community development, economic growth, and overall quality of life. In order to thrive, we deserve the same level of service and commitment that was previously bestowed by Rocky Mountain Power and the San Juan County Road Department.

Therefore, we demand a revisiting of these arrangements and insist on accountability from the involved Navajo Nation agencies and businesses. This includes improving road conditions to the standard set by San Juan County Road Department and demanding the NTUA to operate as a true nonprofit, prioritizing service over profit. Let's strive for improved road maintenance and reliable utility services for Navajo Nation in Utah and all for our Diné people. Please sign this petition to echo our demand for quality service and commitment to our community.
