Demand for Accountability & Transparency After Shameful Incidents@Masjid Sabireen Houston
The Issue
Dear Sabireen Masjid Leadership and ISGH Board of Directors,
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatahu,
We are writing today as deeply disappointed members of this community. What took place at the masjid was not only shameful, but it was also an affront to the very values this sacred space is supposed to uphold—truth, justice, safety, and respect.
Masjid As-Sabireen has been a pillar of this community and beloved to all who attend. Many positive changes over the years have lead it to become home for a growing young community.
So let us be absolutely clear: the events that unfolded today were not just a misstep—they were a betrayal of the trust this community places in its leadership. The use of police to handcuff a muslim sister protesting against giving this platform to a soft zionist and Br. Fuad Cochinwala threatening a protesting 11 year old with arrest is unacceptable. Threatening arrest and intimidation of a child are the direct tactics of Israeli Defense Forces.
In order to restore this trust and move forward in the right direction, we demand the following:
-A public apology to Sr. Amina Ishaq from the entire administration at Masjid Sabireen.
-A public apology from Br. Fuad Cochinwala to the 11-year old boy he threatened with arrest both inside and outside the masjid.
- All people complicit in these incidents need to immediately step down
-A town hall with Masjid Sabireen community members to discuss these events and answer the community’s rightful questions.
-A mayoral candidate forum with Q&A from the public which allows all candidates to present their views fairly so the community can be informed and make wise decisions.
-ISGH adopt new or revised bylaws regarding political speeches at the masjid and members of administration endorsing those who are running for office.
-ISGH adopt a permanent pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist policy or position in collaboration with the American Muslims for Palestine and other Palestinian groups.
- The above policy & bylaws are to get feedback from the community via open forum or voting.
Furthermore, we need transparency in the following matters:
1. Do you intend to give a platform to anyone and everyone?
Who decides which candidates get a platform at this masjid? We demand transparency: who makes these decisions? What are the criteria? Is it political alignment, personal relationships, or outside pressure?
Furthermore, if the mic is open to those who oppose our community’s interests and don't stand with Palestine, as Naushad has done several times in City Council, then it should also be open to those who dissent. It should be the congregation’s right to heckle, question and challenge.
2. Who called the police, and who gave the order to handcuff Sr. Amina?
The officer arrived ready to escalate—and he found an eager excuse to lay his hands on a brown, hijabi Muslim woman. Who invited that violence into our masjid? Who chose punishment over dialogue? We want names. We want accountability. We want all involved in this to be let go of their respective positions in BLIC
3. Several brothers in leadership spoke with aggression and hostility. Will there be a reprimand or training for this?
Leaders are meant to be shepherds, not bullies. Being loud, dismissive, and condescending—is not befitting the adab of any masjid administration member, whether official or unofficial. There should be serious consequences for this.
All our questions and suggestions above are aimed to protect the spiritual, emotional, and political integrity of this community. We deserve real answers and honest dialogue regarding these difficult topics, not vague blanket statements.
As it was said today, this is a house of Allah and that means it belongs to the community. We hope it will be mindful of the people it is meant to serve and that actions will be taken to show good faith.
We await your response.
