Demand for a Fair Trial - Juveniles

The Issue

Landon Allen is a living example of the systemic flaws within our legal system; he has been incarcerated since his juvenile years, despite the lack of concrete evidence against him till this day and year 2025. His conviction was based on a premature judgement fueled by misinformation retrieved from the internet, and in total disregard of the foundational aspects of juvenile justice. Critical considerations, such as the fact that a juvenile's brain is still developing, were erroneously bypassed in this process.

According to the National Academy of Sciences, the brain continues to develop and evolve through adolescence, and this influences an underage individual's behavior. Those under 18 are more likely than adults to make decisions without considering future consequences and are, therefore, less culpable (National Academy of Sciences, 2014). Unfortunately, this fundamental information was not taken into account during Landon Allen’s trial.

Furthermore, the Innocence Project reveals that approximately 2,400 people have been exonerated in the United States after being wrongfully convicted due to an array of systemic issues, with many of them unjustly given verdicts during their adolescence (Innocence Project, 2021). Landon Allen is just one among many other victims of a similar fate.

Teenagers, under the age of 18, lack the experience and mental clarity to make sound decisions compared to adults, yet we are witnessing a clear disregard for these factors in their prosecution. Research shows that a teenager's brain undergoes rapid and extensive developmental changes making them ill-equipped to face the same judicial processes as adults (Steinberg, 2009).

The refusal to contest or reconsider cases of wrongful convictions - particularly juvenile cases is a mockery of a system that should uphold justice. There are many such injustices that continue to exist, with other youngsters finding themselves in situations similar to Landon Allen’s, their futures shattered before they have properly begun.

It is time to introduce reforms and new laws that prevent wrongful convictions and ensure fair trials for all, especially for our youth. Justice for one is justice for all.

This petition seeks to make the authorities acknowledge the gravity of this situation. Let us not allow innocence to be stolen from young lives anymore. We call on you, the citizens, the lawmakers, the decision-makers - to revisit juvenile cases like this and ensure that justice is served rightfully and fairly. We demand a renewed and fair trial for my cousin who has been let down by the system that is supposed to protect him. Join us in this fight for justice for Landon Allen- sign this petition.
