The Issue

I am a Florida public school teacher and a proud member of my union. Every day, I work tirelessly to provide the best education for my students, but recently, two bills have put my ability to effectively advocate for them in jeopardy: SB 1296 and HB 995. These proposed bills threaten the very foundation of our educators’ rights by significantly raising the voting thresholds required for teachers' unions to maintain their certification.

My union is not just a representation of my rights as a professional; it is my voice. It allows me to negotiate fairly for pay, benefits, and working conditions—elements critical not just for my livelihood, but for creating a supportive environment for my students. Unions ensure that I, and countless other educators, have the power to influence decisions that directly affect our classrooms and students' learning conditions.

SB 1296 and HB 995 are concocted to silence that voice. The proposed laws demand unattainably high voting percentages, which would cripple many unions' ability to remain operational. This proposal is not just an attack on unions, but an attack on the students and families who benefit from strong public schools supported by dedicated educators with collective bargaining power.

Let's look at some facts: in states with strong unions, schools boast smaller class sizes, higher teacher retention rates, and better student outcomes. Without the advocacy and negotiation strength of these unions, Florida risks falling behind. The proposed voting thresholds are set at an arbitrary level that is both unnecessary and damaging.

Many teachers are concerned about what the future holds. How will we ensure quality education for Florida's children if educators are stripped of their collective rights to champion change and improvements? Florida's educational system has often struggled, and these bills would only serve to tie the hands of those fighting to uplift it.

We can't do this alone. We need every Floridian who cares about the future of education to stand with us. When teachers have a stronger bargaining position, the entire community thrives—with higher education standards and better resources for students. Join us in urging Florida legislators to protect our collective bargaining rights. By signing this petition, you are supporting not just teachers, but the future of quality education in Florida.

Please sign this petition and help us keep the voice of Florida's educators and the integrity of our schools intact.
