The Issue

In 2013, the State of New Jersey took control of Camden City Schools, promising improvements that have not materialized. Since then, the establishment of charter and Renaissance schools has led to a neglect of traditional public schools, which are now facing devastating budget cuts. The financial mismanagement over the years has led to a $91 million budget deficit, threatening the essential positions and services that directly impact our students’ education and success.

This dire financial situation, exacerbated by the anticipated $36 million shortfall for the next year, calls for immediate action. Our community has been left out of the decision-making process, resulting in cuts that could severely undermine education in Camden and strip away key opportunities from our children.

To address this crisis, we urgently need a thorough, independent audit of the district’s finances. This audit will help uncover opportunities to bridge the gap and ensure more efficient use of resources. Moreover, restructuring the Camden One Enrollment system is imperative to provide accurate data on student populations. This will enable district planners to allocate financial resources effectively and ensure no student is left behind.

Long-term solutions are crucial to prevent our schools from continuously facing budget shortfalls. By implementing strategic changes, we can preserve the positions and services that our children rely on daily. These measures are not merely about numbers; they are about securing a future where every child in Camden has access to quality education without compromise.

It is time for real changes and accountability. Camden deserves better. Demand an independent audit and restructuring for a brighter future. Please sign this petition to support our community and our children’s education.
