The Issue

Our local community group has tirelessly opposed several planning applications seeking to encroach upon the ancient Calais Woods. This historic woodland, which is under a tree protection order, is not only a haven for local biodiversity, including several red listed wildlife species, but also a cherished greenspace for young and old residents alike. Unfortunately, recent developments near the Axis Point site threaten the integrity and ecology of this precious natural site.

Calais Woods boasts significant historical value and contains unique natural flora and fauna, making it an outstanding and irreplaceable part of our local heritage. The Fife Council had initially set forth a planning condition, condition 1c, requiring a 15-meter buffer zone to protect the woodland during developments at the Axis Point site. This condition matches their own policy guidance aimed at preserving valuable green spaces and maintaining biodiversity.

However, we now find ourselves in a situation where these guidelines risk being overlooked to accommodate expanding development interests, jeopardizing the vital buffer zone intended to safeguard our ancient woodlands. Allowing these guidelines to lapse would set a dangerous precedent for our community and other protected sites at risk of development pressure.

We call upon Fife Council to uphold their commitment to protecting Calais Woods by enforcing the mandated 15-meter buffer zone as outlined in their planning condition 1c. By doing so, they will demonstrate a genuine commitment to preserving our natural heritage and the ecological health of Calais Woods. This action will not only safeguard beloved local greenspaces but also set a strong example of responsible and environmentally-conscious governance.

Join us in urging Fife Council to implement their own provisions and protect Calais Woods from these developments. Sign the petition today to make your voice heard in the defense of our treasured natural landscapes. 🏞️ #ProtectCalaisWoods #EnforceBufferZone #Biodiversity
