Demand FIFA to disqualify Argentina from the World Cup
The Issue
Football is supposed to unite people. It is built on respect, fairness, sportsmanship and political neutrality. Every nation enters the FIFA World Cup under the same rules, and every nation should be held to exactly the same standard.
Argentina’s conduct throughout this tournament has fallen well below those standards, and we are calling on FIFA to disqualify Argentina from the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remove them from the World Cup Final.
Following Argentina’s victory over England, members of the Argentina squad celebrated by displaying a banner stating “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”.
This was not a football celebration. It was a political statement regarding the Falkland Islands, an issue that remains deeply sensitive to both the United Kingdom and Argentina.
The World Cup should never be used as a platform for political messages, especially after defeating the country directly involved in that political dispute.
What makes this even more unacceptable is that this is not the first time Argentina have displayed the same message.
In 2014, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association after Argentina’s players displayed the same political banner. They were fined approximately 30,000 Swiss francs, which was around £20,000 at the time.
That punishment clearly achieved absolutely nothing.
Argentina have now repeated the same behaviour on the biggest stage in world football. Another fine would be pointless. A wealthy football association should not be allowed to treat fines as nothing more than the cost of breaking the rules.
Repeat offences require stronger punishments, and this time the punishment must be disqualification.
Their behaviour on the pitch was no better.
During the first half of the World Cup semi final against England, Argentina committed 12 fouls in just 45 minutes. Despite this, only one Argentine player was shown a yellow card before half time.
Twelve fouls in one half is not simply physical football. It is repeated disruption, tactical fouling and aggressive play designed to prevent the opposition from building momentum.
There were also controversial incidents involving contact to England players’ heads and faces, alongside repeated challenges that many supporters, players and pundits believed deserved much stronger punishment.
Argentina repeatedly pushed the boundaries of what was allowed, while the referee failed to properly control the match or punish persistent fouling.
Football is a physical game, but there is a clear difference between competing strongly and repeatedly stopping an opponent through fouls, aggressive challenges and gamesmanship.
This petition is not simply about England losing.
England, like every other nation, must accept defeat when a match is played fairly and when both teams are held to the same standards.
This is about Argentina’s actions before, during and after the match.
It is about a team committing 12 fouls in a single half.
It is about controversial and aggressive challenges going largely unpunished.
It is about repeated gamesmanship and behaviour that goes against the spirit of fair play.
It is about displaying an inflammatory political banner after defeating England.
It is about repeating the same political offence for which Argentina were already punished in 2014.
FIFA cannot continue handing out small fines and pretending the problem has been dealt with.
The previous fine failed.
A further fine will fail again.
Argentina must face a punishment that actually means something.
We therefore call upon FIFA to immediately disqualify Argentina from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, remove them from the World Cup Final and replace them with England.
No investigation that drags on until after the tournament.
No meaningless fine that Argentina can easily afford.
No empty warning that will simply be ignored again.
Argentina must be disqualified.
If FIFA genuinely stands for fairness, respect, political neutrality and equal treatment, then it must prove that no nation is above the rules.
Football belongs to everyone, and the rules must apply to everyone.
