Investigators removed 227 dogs and 4 cats from a single property in Adair County, Kentucky in early August 2026. The animals were living in filth, and many required immediate medical care for respiratory problems, open sores, and severe mange. The property was so overgrown that rescuers drove past the driveway twice before realizing a residence was there at all.

The conditions didn't develop overnight. "If you physically are walking around every day and you're seeing these dogs in the condition that they're in, she should have called somebody a long time ago and have this taken care of and not let it continue," said Kelly Basham, director of operations for Guardians of Rescue, one of the organizations responding to the case.

A volunteer with Fairy Tails Pet Adoptions in Winchester, which took in more than 20 of the dogs, described a puppy suffering from a condition that was "really easily treatable" but went untreated because "nobody cared enough to take her to the vet," according to Crystal Scearce, a volunteer and foster parent.

Both organizations are now operating well beyond capacity as the animals receive medical care and learn what safety feels like. The public is being asked to donate, foster, and adopt.

Kentucky State Police are investigating. Sign this petition to demand that the Adair County Commonwealth's Attorney file the most serious animal cruelty charges Kentucky law allows and seek a permanent prohibition on the responsible party ever owning or caring for animals again. Two hundred and twenty-seven animals paid the price for this neglect. The people responsible must face real consequences.
