The world is literally on fire, and that's not fearmongering. Our state of Colorado has been ravaged by the Elk and Lee fires, burning through 137,000 acres of land. If that wasn't enough, historic floods came in, destroying roads and bridges that are vital to our communities. It's a disaster that’s beyond our control, and yet, the federal government has turned its back on us.

FEMA stepped in and verified the devastating damage, acknowledging the severity of our situation. But when it came to federal aid, twice we were denied by the Trump administration. This was the first denial of federal disaster assistance in 35 years, leaving us to fend for ourselves while red states were approved for similar help. This is not just unfair; it's a blow to the resilience and resolve of Coloradans who are doing everything to rebuild.

Our communities are paying out of pocket to recover from natural calamities that are escalating with climate change. Families are struggling, infrastructures are shattered, and the environmental impact is long-lasting. All we seek is fairness and assistance that other states are receiving. It's only just to demand what's rightfully ours: federal aid that will help us restore, rebuild, and adapt.

We need to push this administration to provide the aid Colorado desperately needs. We can't just watch as our state suffers from neglect. It's about getting the resources that will enable us to heal and prepare better for the future. When faced with these overwhelming challenges, we should remember that unity brings change.
