Demand FCC Recognize Fairfield County, CT as Part of the CT Television Market & Not NY's
The Issue
As a resident of Fairfield County, Connecticut, I find it deeply concerning that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) does not recognize our county as part of the Connecticut market. Instead, we are considered part of the New York market. This classification significantly impacts our access to local news and information which is crucial for making informed decisions in our daily lives and during major events.
Fairfield County is geographically located in Connecticut and its residents identify themselves as being part of this state. It's only logical that we should have access to news broadcasts from our own state rather than from New York. The lack of local information could potentially influence voting patterns and other significant decisions due to misinformation or lack thereof.
Moreover, television service providers should at least offer residents who live in state border communities an option between two local areas. Currently, this choice is not provided which further limits our access to relevant news.
According to a study by Pew Research Center, 47% Americans prefer watching TV news over any other platform (source: Pew Research Center). Denying us access to local television broadcasts means depriving almost half of Fairfield County's population their preferred source for staying informed about their community.
This petition calls on the FCC to reconsider its market classifications and recognize Fairfield County as part of the Connecticut market instead of New York's. We also urge television service providers operating in border communities like ours to offer customers a choice between two local areas.
Please sign this petition if you believe in fair media representation for all communities regardless their geographical location or perceived affiliations.
