Argentina has won a World Cup before. Spain has now won the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The result has been decided on the pitch, and there is no legitimate reason to simply erase the final because some supporters are unhappy with the outcome.

A petition has been launched calling for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina to be replayed, reportedly because some Argentine supporters believe that the referee made decisions that unfairly affected the match. However, if allegations of corruption or unfair officiating are going to be made, they must be treated seriously and investigated through evidence — not used as a reason to automatically demand that a legally completed World Cup Final be played again.

This petition is not about attacking Argentina as a country or every Argentine football supporter. It is about defending the principle that football must have rules, consequences and integrity.

Spain won the final. The trophy was awarded. The match was completed. A result cannot simply be cancelled because one side does not accept defeat. If every losing team could demand a replay whenever its supporters believed the referee made a mistake, football competitions would become impossible to finish.

At the same time, any credible allegation of referee misconduct must be investigated properly. If there is evidence that an official acted corruptly, FIFA should examine that evidence through an independent process. But the same standard must apply to everyone. There must not be one set of rules for Argentina and another set of rules for Spain.

The events surrounding the final also deserve attention. International reports have described a heated confrontation involving players after the match, and FIFA has confirmed that it is investigating the incidents that occurred after the final whistle. These events raise an important question: if people are demanding that the final be replayed because of alleged officiating problems, should the conduct of the players and teams also be examined with the same seriousness?

Spain played the final, accepted the decisions made during the match and ultimately won the World Cup. Spanish players and supporters should not have their victory taken away simply because the losing side or some of its supporters refuse to accept the result.

Football cannot work like this. A team cannot lose a final and then attempt to rewrite history through public pressure until the result changes. The World Cup must be decided by the match that was played — not by whichever fanbase creates the largest petition after the final.

If Argentina believes that the referee was corrupt, then let there be a transparent and independent investigation. If evidence proves serious misconduct that materially affected the result, FIFA can take whatever action its rules allow. But without such evidence, the result must stand.

The same principle should apply to every national team, including Spain.

We therefore call on FIFA and the football community to:

Respect the official result of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.
Reject any automatic replay of the final based solely on allegations or fan dissatisfaction.
Investigate any credible claims of referee corruption or serious officiating misconduct through an independent and transparent process.
Investigate the incidents and conduct surrounding the end of the final fairly and without double standards.
Ensure that no team can use public pressure to erase a completed World Cup final without proven and exceptional grounds.
Protect Spain's right to celebrate and retain its World Cup victory unless an official investigation establishes that the match was fundamentally compromised.
Spain earned the right to be called World Champions by winning the final that was played.

If the principle is truly “fair play”, then it must apply to everyone.

A World Cup cannot be replayed simply because one side is unhappy with losing.

Let the evidence decide. Let the rules decide. Let the result stand.
