Demand Fairer and More Inclusive Weight Classes for Heavier Women in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Demand Fairer and More Inclusive Weight Classes for Heavier Women in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The Issue
To the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF),
We, the undersigned members and supporters of the global BJJ community, call for an immediate review and revision of current women's weight categories. Presently, female athletes weighing just over 79.3 kg (GI) or 76.5 kg (No-GI) are grouped into a single “Super Heavy” division with no upper limit — a grouping that places 80 kg athletes against women well over 100 kg. This is unsafe, uncompetitive, and exclusionary.
Male divisions have more equitable weight brackets, especially at heavier weights. Female divisions need the same fairness and granularity. The current format disproportionately impacts heavier women, discourages participation, and undermines the values of inclusion, safety, and athletic equity.
We ask the IBJJF to take action:
1. Introduce at least one new upper-weight category for female competitors in both GI and No-GI divisions:
Example: Super Heavy Gi (80–90 kg), Ultra Heavy (90.1 kg+), super heavy No Gi (78-86) Ultra heavy 87+
2. Implement clear and reasonable weight brackets for the heaviest categories.
3. Conduct regular reviews based on participation and feedback.
BJJ is for everyone. Let’s build a sport that truly reflects that.
