Demand Fair Treatment for Black Residents in Houston Apartment Complex

The Issue

I've been living in my apartment complex in Houston, Texas, battling not only personal health issues but also a pervasive discrimination problem. As someone who suffers from asthma, the environment where I live is crucial to my well-being. I've repeatedly asked my neighbors to refrain from smoking weed outside my front door, given how it exacerbates my condition. Despite multiple complaints, no action has been taken against the ongoing smoking, specifically by my non-black neighbors.

This pattern of inaction isn't an isolated case. Black residents, like myself, in our apartment complex, consistently face neglect and discrimination compared to our white/ Hispanics counterparts. When we voice complaints about maintenance issues or any breaches of our comfort and safety, we are often disregarded while others receive prompt attention. This inequitable treatment violates not only the fair housing standards but also the Texas Apartment Association (TAA) agreements our complex is supposed to uphold.

Everyone deserves a safe and fair living environment, one where they are listened to and treated with respect, regardless of race. By ignoring the complaints of black residents, the management of our apartment complex is perpetuating systemic discrimination. Additionally, by failing to enforce the agreed-upon TAA standards, they undermine the integrity and trust within our community.

It's time for change. We demand that the apartment management take immediate and transparent steps to address these concerns, including:

1. Implementing a clear anti-discrimination policy that ensures all resident complaints are treated with equal importance and urgency.
2. Training staff to handle complaints transparently, ensuring accountability and equality.
3. Enforcing the TAA agreements consistently for all residents, regardless of race, ensuring every tenant's right to a fair and safe living environment.

Sign this petition to end discrimination and hold our apartment complex accountable. Together, we can create a Houston community that values fairness, respect, and integrity for all its residents.
