Demand Fair Representation – Vote for Change in TWU Local 579 Elections
The Issue
Dear Fellow TWU Local 579 Members,
Thank you once again for signing the petition opposing the recent dues increase. Although that outcome was not in our favor, our collective voice made an impact, and our momentum does not stop here.
We now turn our focus to what’s next: the Delegate and Officer Elections, a critical opportunity to bring about the leadership change our local needs.
What You Need to Know About Delegate Elections:
Ballots have been mailed (to your regular address, not email).
- Every member can vote for up to 8 Delegates and 4 Alternates.
- Voting is membership-wide, not base-specific.
- Completed ballots must be returned by August 18, 2025, when they’ll be counted at 9:00 AM EDT.
What Do Delegates Do?
Local delegates represent our union at larger gatherings like the upcoming TWU International Convention in September.
They serve a vital role in shaping the future of our union by:
- Representing Us: Voting on behalf of Local 579 members at national and international levels.
- Shaping Policy: Contributing to union resolutions, constitutional amendments, and key policy decisions.
- Electing Leadership: Participating in the election of the International President and Executive Council.
- Communicating Back: Bringing critical updates, decisions, and strategies back to our local membership.
Why It Matters:
Delegates serve as the voice of our local. If we want meaningful change, transparency, accountability, and stronger representation, we must elect delegates who truly represent the interests of our membership.
This is our chance to shift the direction of our union. Use your vote to support candidates who will advocate for our rights and values.
What You Can Do Right Now:
- Check your mailbox for your ballot.
- Follow the voting instructions carefully.
- Return your ballot as soon as possible.
Change begins with participation. Let’s take the next step together.
Show your support for leadership change by voting for our Delegates to represent us.
Change starts now.
IN UNITY,
ADELINE CONNER
BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
We, the members of TWU Local 579, are standing together to oppose a proposed dues amendment scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2025. This amendment includes:
1. Setting dues at $48.36 per month, as determined by the TWU Constitution and approved by the TWU International Administrative Committee.
2. Automatically increasing dues whenever wage increases occur, as outlined in the Inflight Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Why We’re Taking a Stand:
This amendment is unjust, lacks transparency, and removes member accountability.
By automatically linking dues to wage increases, leadership is placing an unnecessary financial burden on hardworking Crewmembers—without giving us a say. Wage increases are meant to support Crewmembers and their families—not to be quietly siphoned off through proportional dues hikes.
We deserve a union structure that prioritizes transparency, fairness, and member consent, not policies implemented without clear oversight or justification.
What We’re Demanding:
1. Reject the amendment—Stop automatic dues increases tied to wage adjustments.
2. Commit to financial transparency—Share detailed financial breakdowns and involve members in all dues-related decisions.
3. Require full disclosure—Provide clear explanations and financial reports before proposing any dues changes.
4. Involve members—Establish regular surveys and feedback channels to ensure members have a real voice in decision-making.
Our Leverage:
If leadership approves this amendment and it is finalized by TWU International, we will exercise our rights as Beck objectors under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA). This means:
• We will limit dues payments strictly to costs related to collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance handling.
• We will withhold dues for non-essential activities, ensuring leadership is held accountable.
Why This Matters:
Union leadership is elected to represent and serve its members—not to impose policies behind closed doors. This is our union. We will not accept financial decisions made without our consent.
Sign this petition today to reject the unfair dues amendment and demand leadership that puts members first!
