Demand Fair Pricing for Veterinary Services
The Issue
I was left feeling powerless and frustrated when my beloved pet needed help. She was constantly scratching, and in distress, I quickly took her to our local vet. Sadly, the treatment - a bottle of shampoo and tablets - that cost me £116, failed to show any improvement. When the condition of my pet didn't improve, I returned to the vet only to be asked to pay £70 for a blood test, and an additional £58 for another consultation. This came to a total of a shocking £244, all for services that have shown no improvement in my pet's condition. I am not alone in my struggle; countless pet owners are dealing with the stress of not only having a sick pet but also managing exorbitant veterinary costs.
Across the UK, many pet owners are facing the same situation. Data from the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) shows that in average Britons spend around £50 per month caring for a dog, which equates to about £600 per year. However, the cost of the health care itself is often much higher. A single illness or injury can result in unexpected vet bills amounting to hundreds or even thousands of pounds. This causes additional stress and could potentially cause unnecessary harm or even the death of beloved pets.
We cannot allow this practice to continue. We believe that just as there is a duty of care for our pets, there should be a duty of fairness in the veterinary community. We call for the establishment of a regulatory body to monitor and control the fees charged by veterinarians, ensuring affordability and fairness without compromising on the quality of care. It's high time that we put a stop to these exorbitant rates, enabling pet owners to receive the services their pets so desperately need without having to worry about crippling costs.
Please, sign this petition to make veterinary services fair and affordable for all pet owners.
