As a parent of two disabled children, both of whom have autism and additional medical conditions, I understand firsthand the challenges faced by families in Shenandoah County, Virginia, when it comes to finding qualified caregivers. It is already daunting to find experienced and knowledgeable individuals to care for our loved ones, but this task becomes nearly impossible when the pay offered is so low. Currently, Medicaid is compensating caregivers a mere $13.88 per hour in Shenandoah County, which pales in comparison to neighboring areas such as Warren County and Northern Virginia, where caregivers receive as much as $18 per hour for the same services.

The disparity in pay not only undervalues the critical and challenging work that caregivers perform but also significantly impacts the quality of care received by those in need. Many potential caregivers are understandably unwilling to accept such low wages, resulting in a shortage of qualified individuals willing to work with disabled people in our county. This situation leaves families, like mine, without essential support and poses a significant risk to the well-being and development of our disabled children.

Caregivers play a pivotal role in the lives of disabled individuals; they enable our loved ones to lead lives that are as enriching and independent as possible. When caregivers are compensated fairly, they can focus on providing the best possible care rather than being burdened with financial strain. This is not only beneficial for the caregivers but is crucial for the families who depend on them.
