Demand fair access to the BBC for independent filmmakers

Demand fair access to the BBC for independent filmmakers
The Issue
We are calling on the BBC to reconsider its position on screening independent films without “recognisable stars,” and to engage in a constructive dialogue about how high-quality work can reach audiences on its platforms.
This is not just about one film—it is about ensuring the BBC continues to represent the full spectrum of British storytelling.
The feature film Reparations, alongside Too Young For Love, has already demonstrated clear value:
Selection at 80+ international film festivals
Multiple major awards, including Best Director, Screenplay, and International Film
Strong production standards with internationally recognised collaborators
The issue is not quality—it is access.
Audiences today discover content through relevance, authenticity, and word-of-mouth—not just star power. By prioritising recognisable actors, the BBC risks overlooking important, high-quality work and limiting opportunities for emerging talent.
As a public service broadcaster, the BBC has a duty to reflect diverse voices, support innovation, and provide culturally significant content. Independent films like Reparations align directly with this mission.
We propose a practical, low-risk solution:
A limited release on BBC iPlayer
Placement within a relevant curated strand
A digital-first trial to measure audience engagement
We call on the BBC to:
Assess Reparations on its merits
Clarify its criteria on casting and marketability
Create a transparent pathway for independent filmmakers
Pilot digital-first opportunities for non-star-led films
Rejecting films solely due to the absence of recognisable actors risks narrowing the range of stories available to audiences and undermining the BBC’s public service role.
This is not a confrontation—it is an opportunity for the BBC to lead.
