Demand Facebook to Implement a More Inclusive Relationship Status Feature
The Issue
As an individual who, along with many friends, identifies as single, we are tired of feeling marginalized by the couple- and nuclear-family-centric rhetoric that is prevalent on platforms like Facebook. Our relationship status should not imply that we are "less than" or peripheral to those in traditional relationships.
Facebook's current relationship status options are amatonormative and couple-centric, which can be alienating for users who do not fit into these categories. This lack of inclusivity is not reflective of the diverse range of relationships that exist in our society today. According to data from the U.S Census Bureau (2019), more than 45% of all U.S adults were single – a clear indication that non-traditional family units are becoming increasingly common.
We call upon Facebook to implement changes to their platform by introducing a write-in section for “Relationship Status” or at least make it less amatonormative and couple-centric. By doing so, they would be acknowledging and validating the experiences of millions around the world who do not conform to conventional relationship norms.
We urge you to sign this petition if you believe in promoting inclusivity on social media platforms like Facebook. Your signature can make a difference in ensuring everyone feels seen and represented accurately online.
