Demand equitable scheduling in Alabama's public universities
The Issue
For years, Alabama's public universities have displayed exceptional athletic prowess on both regional and national levels. Institutions funded by our taxpayer dollars, such as Troy University, Jacksonville State University, the University of South Alabama, and esteemed HBCUs like Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University, deserve recognition and opportunity equivalent to their potential. Yet, consistently, these universities are overlooked for prominent in-state matchups. Instead, lucrative games and opportunities for exposure are extended to out-of-state programs that secure multi-million dollar payouts, while our local institutions are sidelined.
This issue is not only a matter of fair play in sports scheduling but also equity in financial and brand-building opportunities. When prestigious matchups are kept within the state, it not only strengthens our local educational institutions but also keeps economic benefits and investments within our community. The students, athletes, and fans deserve to see their universities highlighted and their athletic talents showcased on the home field.
We propose that Alabama's public university athletic departments and governing bodies commit to scheduling against in-state Group of 6, FCS, and HBCU programs. By doing so, they will foster a stronger sense of community, provide fair competition, and retain financial benefits within our state.
Data shows that when in-state rivals compete, there's an increase in viewership and a boost in local economies. Moreover, state pride is heightened, and student engagement is significantly enhanced. It's time for Alabama to support its own institutions by giving them equal opportunity to excel and gain exposure.
We are calling upon the higher education authorities, athletic departments, and state legislators to mandate equitable scheduling practices.
