I'm a 41-year-old woman standing at 4'11", and for years, I've been the sole caregiver for my 17 and 18-year-old children. They're not just my children; they're young adults with unique and profoundly challenging worlds. Both of my kids, and I, have neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Imagine the struggle of trying to ensure a better life for two young lives while you're also managing your own challenges. Our society often overlooks individuals like us - those who may have a higher IQ or the mental capabilities that lead to the assumption of independence, but who still grapple with the complexities of neurodevelopmental disorders. We should not be required to have Medicaid to access resources or support services. It's an unnecessary barrier that doesn’t consider our individual needs or circumstances.

Currently, I'm not receiving any help from government-funded organizations like the Senate Bill 40 Board. I've had to contend with bureaucratic nonsense to meet even our basic needs. Due to my financial bracket, marital status, and a misunderstood perception of independence, we are barred from essential support. Despite not being on food stamps or SSDI funds, every day brings new challenges.

Furthermore, I live in constant fear because I can't leave the house safely with my children, who need consistent care and attention. Isolation shouldn’t be the price we pay for a lack of government support. I am calling on policymakers and relevant organizations to uplift families like mine by fostering an environment of inclusion, understanding, and equal access to support services, regardless of financial status.

We need concrete changes that allow families to access necessary services based on actual need, not arbitrary measures or misunderstood criteria.
