The Issue

I am writing this petition as a survivor and a child safety advocate, impelled by my personal journey through the foster care system where abuse, neglect, and unsafe placements were prevalent. This is not just my story, it is the reality of countless children who continue to face the same systemic failures today.

Foster care is supposed to be a sanctuary for children in need, but for many, it becomes yet another environment of danger and instability. I have witnessed the persistent gaps in the system where institutional loyalty often overrides the child’s safety and well-being. It is heartbreaking that convenience and silence, rather than decisive action, determine the fates of countless vulnerable children.

Statistics reveal alarming truths: numerous reports, such as those from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, indicate that thousands of children in foster care experience abuse at the hands of their caregivers. Moreover, the current accountability measures for mandatory reporters are insufficient. Too many warning signs go unnoticed, and the very mechanisms meant to protect these children seem to fail them repeatedly.

That is why I am calling for comprehensive legislative reform to ensure child safety in foster care is a priority. More stringent monitoring, enhanced protection laws, and accountability for those responsible for reporting abuses are urgently needed. We need reforms that prioritize a child's well-being over bureaucratic delays and institutional preservation.

Our goals should include establishing independent oversight mechanisms, enhancing training for social workers and mandatory reporters, and ensuring transparency and accountability at all levels of the foster care system. These steps could make a significant difference in preventing abuse and ensuring that foster care achieves its fundamental goal, protecting and nurturing children in need.

Please join me in urging our lawmakers to pass and enforce stronger legislation that genuinely prioritizes the safety and well-being of children in foster care. Sign this petition to demand action and help protect the vulnerable children who cannot advocate for themselves. Together, we can push for the changes necessary to safeguard their futures.
