I reside in the Newbigging blocks, living with my two daughters. Since May 2024, our home has been severely damaged by water ingress, primarily due to neglect of necessary roof repairs. As a result, the walls of our dwelling have become black and rotten, with mold and dampness making the environment more hostile for habitation. Our pleas for repair have continuously fallen on deaf ears within the East Lothian council, leaving us feeling brushed off, unheard, and blatantly ignored. Newbigging blocks are falling apart everyday and seriously unsafe to health and safety.

We cannot allow such indifference to continue in East Lothian. Neglected housing repairs are a widespread issue affecting many households. Living in poor and hazardous conditions is a serious health and safety threat, especially to children and the elderly. We demand that East Lothian council acknowledge and promptly address these housing conditions, which are affecting numerous families and individuals daily.

The East Lothian council holds a responsibility towards ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. It is high time that proper importance and priority be given to robust maintenance regimes and swift action in repairing the housing stock that is currently in disrepair.
