Demand East Greenbush Central School District Prioritizes Food Safety in Schools

The Issue

As a concerned parent and member of the East Greenbush Central School District, I'm disheartened and frustrated by our school board's refusal to implement important food safety measures. Our children aren't another row in the budget spreadsheet - their health should be paramount, and yet harmful ingredients and toxic preservatives like artificial flavorings and petroleum-based dyes continue to plague the meals they eat every day at school.

Research has shown these substances do harm. Artificial food colorings have been linked to hyperactivity in children, weakened immune system, and even cancer [Sources: National Institutes of Health (NIH); Food and Drug Administration (FDA)]. One can hardly overstate how essential it is that we take action now and remove these from our food programs. The State of California has already banned these harmful ingredients and NYS legislature has been considering similar legislation, which is backed by scientific studies showing adverse impacts on children's behavioral and mental development.

What's more, the district's reluctance also squanders an opportunity to support local farming. Choosing locally sourced foods not only guarantees fresher and healthier meals for our children, but also bolsters the local economy and builds a stronger community.

We must ensure "food safety" is made a focus within our health and safety committees. Adding such a focus sends a powerful message about the value we place on the wellbeing of our children and community.

The choice is straightforward - choose proactive commitment to health or continue down a path of complacency, putting our children's health at risk every day. Please sign our petition urging East Greenbush Central School District to prioritize food safety in schools now.
