Demand E-Learning for Unit 5 School District on Extremely Cold Weather Days

The Issue

Unit 5 Schools should be moved to an online learning day on January 22, 2025. On an unseasonably cold morning, a child in the neighborhood, warmly dressed and awaiting their school bus, fainted from the extreme cold. This distressing incident has raised an urgent question: Shouldn't our children be safe from exposure to severe weather conditions while getting an education? The fact that our children are expected to withstand harsh weather to attend school is unthinkable and poses a serious risk to their health.

In the United States, the National Weather Service issues advisories for cold weather when wind chills are expected to go below -20 degrees Fahrenheit, suggesting the potential dangers of exposure at these temperatures (source: Weather.com). Yet, our schools often remain open, obligating children to travel and wait for buses in these dangerous conditions.

We call on the local school district and other relevant authorities to adopt a policy allowing for 'Cold Days,' essentially snow days for extreme cold. This change would act much like heatwave policies in places such as Arizona, where schools close when temperatures exceed safe levels (source: Azcentral.com).

The time is now to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our children over the discomfort of rearranging a single day's logistics. Sign this petition to demand school E-Learning on dangerously cold weather days.
