The Issue

Christopher Payne, my only son and a United States citizen, has been languishing in arbitrary detention in Japan for the past 4.5 years. As a single parent, his absence has been an unimaginable burden on me, compounded by the grave injustices he is facing there. Christopher's mental and physical health are deteriorating, and yet, there has been no tangible support from the United States government. This situation resonates with several other U.S. citizens caught in similar legal limbos, deprived of due process in Japan.

Christopher has been isolated in solitary confinement under "hostage justice," a practice where detainees are denied proper legal representation and subjected to prolonged isolation. His case was initially overturned by the Tokyo High Court, promising hope of release. However, he remains detained without bail, a clear denial of justice and human rights.

The lack of intervention and support from the United States government is shocking. Christopher deserves fair treatment and the right to bail while his case is further evaluated. His prolonged detention highlights a disturbing trend in Japan's legal system that urgently needs addressing.

We, the global community, must rally to bring awareness to Christopher’s case and demand justice. His plight represents a blatant disregard for human rights and international justice standards. It is imperative that the U.S. government takes decisive action to advocate for Christopher and others in similar predicaments.

Please join us in urging the U.S. government and the Japanese authorities to ensure due process for Christopher Payne and provide the assistance necessary for his release on bail. Sign this petition to stand against arbitrary detention and to uphold justice and human dignity for all.
