Demand DOD to Address Barracks Health Hazards

The Issue

My personal experience as a service member at Fort Leonard Wood was a constant struggle with illness, directly linked to the deplorable barracks conditions.

This isn't an isolated issue; a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report (GAO-23-105797) reveals that thousands of troops across all branches face similarly appalling living conditions. These aren't just inconveniences; they are serious health hazards with broken windows, rampant mold, pest infestations, and malfunctioning heating systems that compromise the well-being and operational readiness of our armed forces.

These troubling conditions stem from the Department of Defense's (DoD) chronic underfunding, meeting a low percentage of maintenance needs, and a severe oversight shortfall. This is unacceptable. We cannot stand by while those who defend our country are housed in such substandard environments. Our military personnel deserve to be cared for with the utmost dignity and respect.

We have already taken the first steps to fix this. I've made the necessary connections to get this project off the ground. The documents have been drafted, and a military contract proposal has been prepared to ensure this plan can be executed. Now, we need your support to make it a reality.

This petition demands immediate and decisive action from the DoD, calling for mandatory, independent inspections of all barracks to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Furthermore, it advocates for increased funding to meet actual maintenance requirements and suggests the adoption of a long-term solution: the use of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) boards to replace substandard materials that fail to resist mold and deterioration.

Please, let's stand together and demand accountability and transparency. Sign this petition to urge the DoD to act swiftly, safeguarding the health and well-being of those who serve our nation so courageously. Their safety and dignity can't be overlooked or postponed any longer.
