Demand Decreased Sugars and Processed Foods in School Meals

The Issue

As a believer in the importance of our children's health, I recognize that the meals they consume at school play a crucial part in their overall wellbeing. Our children entrust us with their health, and we have the responsibility to ensure they are nourished with nutrient-dense foods. Regrettably, the food served in school breakfasts and lunches often contains high levels of sugar and heavily processed ingredients, which are not beneficial for their health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents in the U.S. is around 19.3%, affecting about 14.4 million youngsters. Additionally, the American Heart Association reports that children who consume high-sugar diets are more likely to have poor lipid profiles, a major risk factor for heart disease in adulthood.

The intake of ultra-processed foods and sugary beverages is associated with an increased risk of chronic illnesses like diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Evidence indicates that our current feeding practices in schools could be leading to an increased risk of these diseases among children.

We are calling on school administrators, dietitians, and policymakers to make a change. It's time to reduce the amount of sugar and processed foods in school meals. Instead, let's provide our children with whole foods that are lower in sugar and higher in nutrients, promoting their immediate and long-term health.

It is a child's right to be fed healthy, nutritious meals which are essential for their growth and development. Let's prioritize our children's health today. Please sign this petition to advocate for healthier school meals. Your support means the future of our children’s health and well-being.
