Our honeybees are vital for the pollination of our crops, wildflowers, and trees. Without them, the delicate balance of our ecosystem in Northern Ireland could crumble, affecting not just plant life but the animals and humans who rely on them. This is why it is crucial for the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) to fulfil their statutory duty to provide beekeepers with a fully functioning, well-staffed Bee Inspectorate.

The Bee Inspectorate plays a critical role in safeguarding the health of our bees. They conduct inspections, monitor diseases, and provide vital support and guidance to beekeepers. Currently, due to understaffing and lack of resources, our Bee Inspectorate is struggling, leaving our bees vulnerable to disease and pests like the Varroa mite, which has been devastating bee populations worldwide.

In Northern Ireland, beekeeping isn't just a hobby—it's a necessity for maintaining agricultural productivity and biodiversity. Properly functional bee inspectorate services could prevent losses in bee colonies, ensure productive pollination, and thus support our rural economy. DAERA has the obligation under the law to ensure this critical service is operational and effective.

According to the National Bee Unit, a single bee colony can contribute over £600 to the local economy each year through pollination services. Yet, despite their economic and ecological importance, bees in Northern Ireland are not receiving the attention and protection they desperately need.

By signing this petition, you are joining the call for DAERA to fulfil its obligations by adequately staffing and resourcing the Bee Inspectorate. Together, we can protect our invaluable honeybees and ensure the thriving of Northern Ireland's environment and economy.
