The Issue

I am one among many homeowners facing an unexpected and financially crippling reality. In our community of well-kept, newly built homes, we expected a haven, a solid structure that could withstand weather's trials. What we got, heartbreakingly, was subpar roof construction that has already led to the replacement and repair of shingles twice in four short years.

The shingles on homes built by D.R Horton Builders in the Stonewater community are so poorly installed or of such low quality that they fly off easily, even in winds that wouldn't historically be considered damaging. Within four years, most of us have seen severe damage, our shingles flying away and leaving our roofs — and our homes — vulnerable.

The National Roofing Contractors Association states, “Wind resistance and uplift ratings for asphalt shingles are important in high-wind areas.” Yet these homes that are barely four years old witness repeated damage, indicating a clear breach of this standard. Moreover, the onus has fallen on us, the homeowners, to bear the financial burden for the builder's poor construction.

We request that D.R Horton Builders acknowledge this issue, extend the warranty on their roofs, and compensate homeowners who've already paid out-of-pocket for repairs due to their construction faults. This situation not only addresses our financial woes but also highlights the potential need for stronger laws and regulations around building standards and quality assurance practices.

It's time to redefine the homeowner's dream, not in terms of square footage or aesthetic accents, but in terms of quality, safety, and longevity. Your signature can help us put pressure on the builders and raise awareness among potential new home buyers—sign our petition today.
