In 2017, a tragic accident at the Great Orton crossroads took the life of a motorcyclist. Despite the coroner’s report that urgently called for improvements to enhance road safety, the intersection at the corner of C1021 and Orton Road remains an accident-prone zone. This perilous location has become infamous for tragic collisions, with numerous close calls and serious injuries continuing to plague our community as a direct result of inadequate road safety measures.

The Great Orton crossroads isn't just a danger to motorists but poses a significant risk to pedestrians and cyclists who navigate this route daily. The responsibility lies with the Cumberland Council Highways Department to prioritize the health and safety of its citizens by addressing this enduring hazardous road layout. Our community deserves safer roads for everyone’s protection and peace of mind.

The current state of affairs at this intersection is unacceptable. We urge the Cumberland Council to take immediate action by implementing clear and visible signage, improving road markings, and installing traffic calming measures such as reduced speed, stop signs or moving the road ends to a staggered crossroads.

Road safety should not be a reactive measure taken only after tragedies occur. It is imperative that the Cumberland Council prioritizes these suggested enhancements to prevent future accidents and save lives, fostering a culture of safety and caution for residents and visitors alike.

Roadworks were due to take place from 27th July to 14th August 2026 but these did not materialise.  Since the incident in 2017 the road is used significantly more by cut through traffic especially since the reduction of speed limit on the A595 to 50mph. The roads around Great Orton, Baldwinholme and Orton Rigg are used as a rat run by heavy traffic these roads aren't designed to take.
