Demand Comprehensive Investigation and Action on Burn Pit Exposure for Veterans and Public

The Issue

To: United States Congress, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Environmental Protection Agency

We, the undersigned, call for immediate and comprehensive action to address the severe health impacts of burn pit exposure on veterans and to investigate the broader implications for public health due to widespread plastic burning.

Whereas:

Extensive scientific research has established a clear link between military burn pit exposure and serious health conditions, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and potentially cancer.

The toxic emissions from burn pits, particularly those containing plastics, have been shown to cause significant lung inflammation and injury in laboratory studies.

Advanced modeling has demonstrated that hazardous pollutants from burn pits can affect areas up to 5 kilometers away, with exposure intensified by certain geographical and meteorological conditions.

Long-term health impacts of burn pit exposure persist and may worsen years after initial exposure, suggesting potential transgenerational effects.

The practice of open burning of waste, including plastics, is not limited to military operations but occurs globally, posing a wider public health threat.

We petition for:

Immediate expansion of healthcare coverage and benefits for all veterans exposed to burn pits, regardless of their specific diagnosed conditions.

Allocation of substantial research funding to further investigate the long-term health effects of burn pit exposure, including potential impacts on future generations.

Development and implementation of advanced diagnostic tools and treatments specifically tailored for conditions related to toxic exposure from burn pits.

A comprehensive environmental impact study on the effects of plastic burning in various settings, from military operations to civilian waste management practices.

Stricter regulations on waste incineration practices, both in military and civilian contexts, with a focus on reducing toxic emissions.

Public education campaigns about the dangers of burning plastics and other toxic materials, aimed at both policymakers and the general public.

International cooperation to address the global issue of toxic emissions from waste burning, particularly in developing nations where the practice is common.

By signing this petition, you are supporting not only our veterans but also contributing to a broader understanding of environmental health risks that affect us all. The lessons learned from studying burn pit exposure can inform better practices and policies to protect public health worldwide.

Let us honor our veterans' service by ensuring their health is protected and use this knowledge to safeguard the health of all citizens exposed to similar environmental hazards.

Sign now to demand action and justice for our veterans and to protect public health from the dangers of toxic emissions from burning waste.
